The file compiled by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on Syria's illegal narcotics activities is so big it will cost over $100,000 to duplicate.
Attorney, Joseph Boohaker of Birmingham, Ala., Vice-Chairman of the Council of Lebanese American Organizations, filed a Freedom of Information Request with the DEA to obtain information compiled by the U.S. federal agency.
The DEA informed Mr. Boohaker, in a letter dated December 7, that information he is requesting about Syrian illegal narcotics production will cost $108,110.38 to duplicate. Mr. Boohaker, in his request, specifically asked the Drug agency for a file titled "Operation Minaret" a sensitive DEA investigation of Syrian controlled Heroin production and distribution centered in the Lebanese Bekaa Valley.
" I knew there was an on-going investigation by the DEA but I had no idea that it was so extensive," Mr. Boohaker exclaimed! " We initially obtained information about the U.S. investigation from narcotics police officials in Lebanon who cooperated in the operation. According to documents we have been able to obtain, over ten tons of Heroin is being produced by the Syrian cartel each year, a large percentage of it is showing up in America."
Late last month the Cable News Network aired a report that included clandestine video pictures of members of the Colombian drug cartel meeting with Syrian drug lords in Larnaca, Cyprus. The Syrian identified in the video tapes was Raiss Assad the nephew of Syrian president, Hafaz Assad. " The White House and the U.S. State Department apparently do not talk to their own Drug Agency," Mr. Boohaker said. " Members of the Council met with National Security Advisor, Thomas Haas two weeks ago and he claimed the White House had no knowledge of Syrian drug activity." The Council of Lebanese American Organizations is an avid foe of Syria's presence in Lebanon. " A government like Syria's that is involved in wholesale international narcotics trafficking and supports terrorists like the group under investigation for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 last December 22, has no business playing any role in Lebanon's future. The U.S. State Department is apparently supporting Syria's presence in Lebanon.
