The fate of animals is of greater importance to me than the fear of appearing ridiculous; it is indissolubly connected with the fate of men.
Emile Zola
Havre- Montana. Montana. Montana. The rustic state treasured by Americans as a land of adventure, is a land of intrigue far beyond what Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid knew when they robbed the Northern train near Malta a century ago.
With heavy sacks of money, the duo high-tailed it out of Montana, down south to their hideout in Hole in the Wall, Wyoming. The outlaws planned ahead before they robbed the train, by lining up a string of relay horses for the getaway.
The Malta heist was the record gross train robbery; the bandits escaped with $40,000 in cash and gold coin. From Hole in the Wall the two outlaws galloped off to South America with a lady friend; they disappeared, then they re-emerged in a film classic, as actors Robert Redford and Paul Newman, generations later.
Robert Redford has never grown tired of the natural beauty of Montana. His new film "The Horse Whisperer" is yet another tome to the scenic wonders of Montana.
Redford takes the Nicholas Evans best seller and enhances the story. The wide-screen background for the story, (filming is again around the Livingston- Bozeman area), is breathtaking.
Robert Redford directs and stars in this stirring tale of 14-year-old Grace MacLean (actress Scarlett Johansson), who is emotionally and physically traumatized after a ghastly riding accident while on her prize horse, Pilgrim.
Realizing the future of her daughter and Pilgrim are inextricably linked, Grace's mother, Annie (actress Kristin Scott Thomas), a successful big city magazine editor, begins an all-out drive to find a "horse whisperer," someone with a unique gift for curing troubled horses.
Annie learns of Tom Booker (actor Robert Redford), a legend for this sort of work, and packs up both daughter, Grace, and horse, Pilgrim, to seek the help of the horse whisperer in Montana.
While Tom Booker works to rebuild all the lives that have been shattered by the accident, love blossoms between the gentle horseman and the uprooted New York sophisticate -- a love with both marvelous and tragic meanings and conclusions.
Montana is Hollywood's favorite rustic setting. Film crews are regularly working here, and people are falling in love with the state. Animal lovers, and nature lovers are also everywhere in Montana.
But there's a different kind of horse in Montana that's not so welcome. It comes from Fabio Ochoa of Columbia, and its called "horse" - highest grade white heroin. (Cocaine is also involved by the tons.) The horse is transshipped around the east coast of Canada- then down into Montana. The story is confirmed by U.S. intelligence sources such as David Hume, of Miami, and others.
Those that have tried to make things right like Tom Booker, have ended up as part of a tragedy as well. Jerry Herdt, Mike Perry, Clinton Mullen, Arnie Hove, Darrel Buck Elk, and J.D. Alexander are just a few who have run into tragedy after trying to fix the bad situation.
Those "horse whisperers" who weren't killed have been mocked and slandered or worse.
The horse and cocaine whispers are indeed founded in fact. The Department of Justice OPI investigation, (directed out of Washington D.C.) is real. An effort is made to allow witnesses privacy by dealing directly with Main Justice. The problems with RCMP detective Leach in Regina, Saskatchewan just won't heal. The problems with federal grand juror Walt Hammermeister, who claims that FBI agent Scott Cruise "lied to him" and "perjured himself" to destroy a key witness and whistleblower can't be ignored.
Neither can the journalist for the east coast publication who recently interviewed Montana Attorney General Joseph Mazurek at his home in Helena.
During the lengthy interview Attorney General Mazurek repeated again and again that there was "nothing to the drug allegations along the Hi-line". "Absolutely nothing" Joseph Mazurek insisted. He'd "checked into it" Joseph Mazurek said. Well, Mazurek sounded authentic to the journalist, until he asked Joseph Mazurek about the Roe Report Then Mazurek claimed he'd "never heard of it". At that point Joseph Mazurek created a big problem for himself and others working in Montana's criminal justice system.
Most good journalists usually don't openly tolerate lies from politicians. Especially when the politician, Joseph Mazurek, is the Democrat protégé, of our popular Republican governor, Marc Racicot. Marc Racicot, the man who has bank records in the Norwest bank branch in Helena which show pay-offs for allowing heroin and cocaine shipments into the United States from Canada. Maybe Joseph Mazurek will look a little deeper after he reads the next installment from the journalist.
Perhaps Joseph Mazurek will discover what Lloyd Wilson has been saying to people from the pay phone in Deer Lodge Prison. Seems Lloyd Wilson wants to tell folks about drug killings in Chinook. Same way several young men in prison in Tennessee would like to express themselves about other killings along the Hi-Line. Maybe this will bring about peace and tranquility for some people in Montana.
I love cats. In the nurture of cats I find enjoyment and pleasure. Redford's Horse Whisperer is designed to appeal, in particular, to women- because it is focused on the gradual healing and rehabilitation of a beloved horse. Women like to nurture. The film revolves around the health story of a horse!
The trick of course for Director Redford is to make "The Horse Whisperer" captivating. The Cannes film reviews say that he's done so in a masterful way.
Caring for animals- is a civilizing experience for people. This is the real story behind the film. Giving, going beyond one's problems, is a commendable trait for humans to develop. Despite the ridicule animal lovers get in some circles, the value of care of animals is essential for mankind. Healthy sensitivity to animals, most always corresponds with healthy sensitivity to humans.
Man's inhumanity to fellow man is what characterizes the lowest part of mankind. This is what we call "the beast in man". A person, such as Marc Racicot, who knowingly harms people for his own gain, by participating in the heroin smuggling is no better than a rabid dog or cat or horse. As unpleasant as the act may be, the pet sometimes has to be put to sleep.
Americans are a civilized people. We don't operate by lynch mobs. But as the drug conspiracy comes into national view- we must insist that the perpetrators receive capital punishment. We must insist that co-conspirators such as Marc Racicot be duly tried and executed. The mechanics of strapping the fiend to the gurney and administering a lethal injection is no different than putting a beloved pet out of its misery. Albeit less painful.
But here, in the case of Marc Racicot, we have a different kind of animal- a brutish beast. He has a malady which the horse whisperer can't heal. The malaise has taken some valuable victims.
